North Carolina Boardmember Urges Dentists to Step Up

Dr. W. Stan Hardesty, a member of the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners, is calling general on dentists to be the spokespeople for dentistry.

“I believe this type of involvement is what makes a good, ethical dentist,” he says.  “It’s important to give back because we’ve got to maintain our level of credibility and professionalism.”

Dr. Hardesty has been working with the North Carolina Board since 2000.  In an interview with the AGD Transcript he stressed that no specific issue, but rather, regulating the profession in the best interest of the public, will determine the success of state dental boards.

“One problem that we all face is interacting with state legislatures,” Dr. Hardesty believes.  “If there is any perceived problem… that dental board could find itself dissolved by the stroke of a pen!”  He encourages dentists and board members to keep in contact with legislators and develop a good working relationship.

“Our board is at the forefront of national issues—things that can impact dentists and patients five to ten years from now,” he notes. “We want to help the profession maintain the highest level of ethical behavior.”
